Site directory structure
Posted on | September 14, 2009 | 8 Comments
We are looking for guidance from beta testers as to what broad categories will be suit campaigners for the directory structure and what sub categories will be needed for each category.
For instance a top level category could be Environmental Issues with sub categories such as Climate Change, Animal Protection, Ranforest Protection etc.
While we could make this up ourselves and indeed have had discussions around it we feel that experience from users would be very beneficial to the project. Please leave suggestions for categories and sub-categories as comments.

It would be good if there was a bank of training tools available.

Hi Jim
Yes that is one of the major items on the list of items to build. We have compiled a list of resources that we will add to the site very soon. If there is anything specific you want to see in the way of resources or training tools plesae let us know and we will look into it.
Many thanks for the suggestion.

Hello,
I would like to see disability as a top level category. Sub categories, maybe employment and access.

I suggest ‘asylum seekers’ with sub catagories including: destitution, detention (including: of children), deportation, right to work, S4 (section 4) support, legal provision, asylum seeker benefits (including: cashless support).

Thanks to all for the ideas on directory structure. We are now working on this but keep them coming !
Top level categories won’t have entries but will be generic groupings of items, probably under 5 main headings: Society and Community, People, Environment, Politics and Government, International Issues
Sub categories will still be fairly generic so as to provide a navigable structure (probably limited to 12)third level categories should therefore remain managable and enable users to find what they want.

How about “Labour issues”, sub topics “Labour disputes”, “Sweatshop labour”, “Workers’ rights”, “Child labour”, “Working lives”

Will Louder have an online facility for hosting MP email actions (ie. allowing people to type in postcode and automatically generate template email to their MP)?

Louise – thanks for the point about MPs.
What we have on the site currently is a link to the MySociety tool Write To Them (http://www.writetothem.com).
Any campaign on the site can use this tool. Two campaigns that are using the tool are:
http://www.louder.org.uk/makemaclarensafe/
http://www.louder.org.uk/changingmindscampaign/
Anyone visiting either of those campaigns can fill in their postcode, the verification code and then click on Write To Them. They will then be taken to the Write to Them site to complete their action.
